Is Cycling Good for Runners?

For a while, that’s often true. Running is the most specific way to prepare your body for running, and no amount of cycling can completely replace that. But as training becomes more consistent and weekly mileage begins to grow, another question quietly appears. Is every additional hour of training best spent on your feet?
The answer isn’t always as obvious as it first seems.
One of the biggest lessons endurance training teaches over time is that your cardiovascular fitness and your musculoskeletal system don’t always progress at the same pace. There are days when your heart and lungs feel ready for more work, while your legs are asking for a little less impact. That’s exactly where cycling begins to make sense—not as an alternative to running, but as another way to support it.
For many runners, the bike isn’t a backup plan. It’s simply another training tool that helps them stay consistent over months and years.
Why Cycling and Running Work So Well Together
If you spend enough time around experienced runners, you eventually notice something that doesn’t seem to make much sense at first. Many of them own a road bike. Some spend hours on Zwift during the winter. Others disappear for long rides as soon as the weather improves.
It can seem almost contradictory. If becoming a better runner means running more, why do so many dedicated runners spend so much time doing something else?
I used to think the answer was simply avoiding injuries. While that’s certainly part of the story, I don’t think it’s the whole story anymore.
The longer I’ve been involved in endurance sports, the more I’ve come to see running and cycling as partners rather than alternatives. They ask different things of the body, but they also share something important. Both challenge the same aerobic engine that ultimately determines how much steady work you can sustain over time.
The difference is how they get there.
Running asks your heart to work while your muscles, tendons and joints repeatedly absorb your body weight thousands of times. Cycling asks the same cardiovascular system to work just as steadily, but without the constant impact that every running stride creates.
That’s what makes cycling so useful for runners.
It allows you to continue developing endurance on days when your aerobic system is still ready to train, but your legs would probably benefit from a little less pounding. It isn’t about replacing running. It’s about recognising that your heart is sometimes willing to do more work than your musculoskeletal system can comfortably tolerate.

What Cycling Can—and Cannot—Replace
The first time I started using cycling as proper endurance training, one thing immediately caught my attention.
My breathing felt familiar. The effort felt familiar.
The numbers on my watch did not.
For an effort that felt comfortably aerobic, my heart rate seemed unusually low. At first, I assumed I simply wasn’t working hard enough. Surely if I wanted the same training effect as an easy run, I should be seeing roughly the same heart rate.
It turns out many runners go through exactly the same thought process.
One of the easiest mistakes to make when moving between running and cycling is assuming that the same aerobic effort should produce the same numbers on your watch. In practice, that’s rarely what happens.
Cycling places less impact on the body and recruits your muscles differently. As a result, many runners naturally see lower heart rates during steady cycling than they do during an equally aerobic run. The training effect hasn’t disappeared. You’re simply asking your cardiovascular system to work through a different movement pattern.
That’s why chasing your running heart rate on the bike can become surprisingly misleading. Instead of asking whether the number matches your running sessions, it’s usually more helpful to ask whether you’re training in the aerobic zone you intended. To me, this is one of those small mindset shifts that quietly changes the way you look at endurance training. The watch hasn’t become less useful. It simply needs to be interpreted differently.
At the same time, it’s important not to confuse aerobic fitness with running performance.
One transfers remarkably well. The other doesn’t.
Cycling can strengthen your aerobic engine, but it cannot teach your body how to run efficiently. Running economy, impact tolerance and the rhythm of thousands of repeated strides are adaptations that only running itself can develop.
That’s why I no longer think of cycling as a substitute for running. I think of it as a way of arriving at my next run a little fitter, and sometimes a little fresher.

When Cycling Makes the Most Sense
One thing I’ve gradually stopped doing is treating every aerobic session as something that has to be a run.
That probably sounds odd coming from someone who enjoys running as much as I do, but somewhere along the way I realised I wasn’t actually becoming fitter by insisting that every easy mile had to happen on foot.
I was simply accumulating more impact. That distinction matters more than it first appears.
After a marathon, for example, my breathing often feels ready to train again long before my legs agree. It’s a slightly strange feeling. Your watch tells you your recovery is improving, your motivation is back, yet your body still carries the memory of 42 kilometres.
Years ago, I would probably have gone for another easy run. Now, I’d be just as happy spending an hour or two on the bike.
The goal isn’t to avoid running. The goal is to arrive at next week’s runs in better condition than I otherwise would have.
I’ve noticed something similar during heavier training blocks. There comes a point where adding another easy run doesn’t really challenge my aerobic system anymore. It mostly adds another hour of impact. Replacing that session with a steady ride often achieves exactly what I wanted from the day while leaving my legs noticeably fresher for the workouts that actually matter.
Summer brings another interesting example.
I used to think skipping a long run because of extreme heat somehow meant compromising my training. I’m not convinced that’s true anymore. Spending two or three comfortable hours on the bike often delivers exactly the kind of aerobic stimulus I was looking for, but with less stress and a much easier recovery afterwards.

The older I get, the less I find myself asking one simple question. “Should I run today?”

For me, that’s probably been the biggest mindset shift of all.
Looking at the Bigger Picture
I’ve noticed something else over the years.
The runners who continue improving year after year aren’t always the ones who train the hardest. More often, they’re the ones who become remarkably good at making sensible decisions.
That might sound less inspiring than stories about heroic training blocks or record-breaking mileage, but I think it’s much closer to reality.
Most runners don’t stop improving because they suddenly lose motivation.
They stop because life gets busy. Because something starts hurting. Because fatigue quietly accumulates until every run feels a little harder than it should.

That’s where cycling has gradually changed the way I think about training.
Years ago, I probably saw it as a compromise. If I couldn’t run, riding the bike felt like settling for second best.
I don’t see it that way anymore.
If an easy ride allows me to arrive at next week’s interval session feeling stronger, or helps me maintain my aerobic fitness through a week when running isn’t the smartest option, then the bike has done exactly what I needed it to do.
The goal was never to become a better cyclist.
The goal was always to become a better runner.
That’s why I’ve slowly stopped judging individual training sessions in isolation. One missed run rarely changes anything. One sensible decision, repeated dozens of times over a season, often changes much more than we realise.
Perhaps that’s the biggest lesson cycling has taught me.
Not every endurance session has to look like running to help me become a better runner.
